The Flying Saucer Song was originally recorded for the Pussy Cats sessions with John Lennon in 1974. The original version played up the skit and set the barroom mood with a slower and more casual vibe. Smoky, Drunken. Idiomatic of the 'lost weekend' and untold nights swapping stories over cognac and cigarettes.

The track was polished for Sandman in 1976 with an ace horn section that I think brought it to life. It is the definition of a deep cut but the lyrics were among my dad's favorites and it is so typically Nilsson to insert such a sentiment in the midst of two incoherent drunks arguing about nothing.

Late last night
In search of light

I watched a ball of fire streak across
the midnight sky

I watched it glow and grow then shrink then sink into
the silhouette of morning

as I watched it die
